B ME Bites 5: Why Do You Do What You Do? - Part 3

Did you know that 95% of your behaviour is unconscious?

Welcome to edition #5 of B ME Bites! This week is Part 3 of the series titled “Why Do You Do What You Do?” As discussed in editions over the past 2 weeks, there’s a reason why you do everything you do, whether it’s a habit that serves you or not. This week, you’ll find out who’s really the king or queen of the castle!

For this edition, you can choose your own adventure to proceed!:

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when trying to make healthy changes, is to focus on the external. For instance, focusing on the number on the scale, on the size of your clothing, the way that your body looks, and making changes accordingly. So often you’re told that you “just have to eat less and do some exercise” and thus you go about treating the symptoms, rather than trying to get to the root cause of the problem. You get results in the short term, but how long do those results last? If you don’t remove the root cause of the problem, the symptoms will continue to reappear over and over again.

Another massive mistake is to try to make changes using willpower and the conscious mind alone. Did you know that of your cognitive activities which include behaviour, emotions, decision and actions, only 5% is conscious? That means that a whopping 95% of what you do is carried out unconsciously.

So what does this mean? It means that if you’re consciously trying to make a change of any kind and it’s not happening, there is usually something going on in your subconscious that is stopping you.

Let’s use a king or queen and their knights as an example. The king or queen is the ruler of the realm and commands the knights. The king or queen gives orders and the knights carry out those orders. However, what happens if the knights don’t agree with what the king or queen is trying to do? What can they do? They can either choose to follow the king or queen’s orders, or, they could choose to overthrow the king or queen and carry out their own agenda.

The king or queen is your conscious mind and the knights are your unconscious mind. When you are making a change, the king or queen will give the command and when the knights do as they’re ordered, you’re successful at making the change. However, if the knights decide that they don’t agree with the king or queen’s orders, for whatever reason, then you will be unable to make the change long term, no matter how hard you try.

So whilst it’s entirely possible to create massive change in your life, it’s important to understand that if the change that you’re trying to create isn’t happening, it’s likely that you need to take a different approach. There are valid reasons for why you do what you do, whether you understand them or not and when you accept that concept, it makes it much easier to effect change because it opens you up to other ways to achieve the same outcome.

There’s a reason why you do everything you do. Why do you do what you do? Who’s in charge of you?

Reader Spotlight

So excited and grateful to have Debra send in the following in response to last week’s edition:

Yes, for years I’ve beaten myself up for being lazy, not good enough, not achieving. In recent years I’ve excelled. Why? Because I’m passionate and committed to what I’m doing and the outcome that flows from my action. Previously the outcome would have been nice but it wasn’t all consuming.

I could have spent more time doing things that brought me joy and less time concerned about not achieving things that didn’t inspire me. It would not have taken away from what I’m now doing.

Money, big house, nice car etc. aren’t motivating for all of us and often the timing has to be right. What do I mean? The goals we set are often not ones we really care about.

When you just get on with life, exploring new experiences, meeting interesting people, doing things that fill your soul, opportunities present themselves (may not look like opportunities, often can look like hard work and sacrifice) that feel like you were born to grab with both hands and run with.

This may not make sense to you yet, but I trust it helps at least one person reading it, and that when the time is right something will click for you and help you embrace your destiny.

Debra

Thank you for your wise words Debra and totally agree!

Weekly Challenge

Your mission for this week, if you choose to accept it, is to do the following:

Think about a goal that you set for yourself that you haven’t succeeded in achieving yet, and analyse who is in charge - you, the king or queen? Or your knights? It’s most probably your knights, so ask yourself the question about why they may not agree with the orders they have been given. Part 1 and Part 2 of this series could be helpful for you, so go back and read them again if nothing comes to mind initially.

If you need some help, feel free to hit reply - let’s help you get started if you’re stuck!

B ME Bites is deliberately sent on a Friday morning (Aussie time) so that where ever you are in the world, you have the weekend to give yourself the gift of implementing a small change towards a better you. What will that small change be? Is there a change that you have been trying to make and haven’t yet succeeded? Give it another go, applying the above - you can do it!
