Why you don't want to is as important as why you do!

Welcome to edition #4 of B ME Bites! This week is Part 2 of the series titled âWhy Do You Do What You Do?â As discussed in last weekâs edition, thereâs a reason why you do everything you do, whether itâs a habit that serves you or not. This week, itâs all about your WHY!
For this edition, you can choose your own adventure to proceed!:

Featured Topic: Itâs not just about your WHY!
Youâve heard many times that your WHY is important. Simon Sinek shot to fame after his Ted Talk on the subject went viral, which then inspired the book, âStart with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Actionâ - now a series of 3 books.
Simon was talking from the perspective of how leaders inspire others to take action and heâs spot on the money of course. When it comes to how you get yourself to take action though, itâs not just your WHY thatâs important. Or rather, itâs not only your reasons why you WANT to do something, that play a role in your success.
Herewith enters another book that discusses the importance of your WHY, called âThe Secret Code of Success: 7 Hidden Steps to More Wealth and Happinessâ, by Noah St John. In this book, Noah says, âYou can never solve a Why-To problem with a How-To solutionâ. So what does that mean exactly?
For everything you do, there are reasons why you want to do something and also reasons why you donât want to do something, whether youâre aware of them or not. Sometimes, the reasons why you donât want to do something outweigh the reasons why you do. This is when you fail. The best way to explain it, is to imagine a set of balancing scales. If more weight is put on a plate on one side than the other, then the scales become unbalanced and tilt to one side. This is what can happen with your WHY. Itâs not that you donât know HOW to do something, itâs that you donât want to do it more than you actually want to do it and the scales are tipped in the wrong direction.
For instance, if someone is a smoker and they want to give up smoking, some reasons why they want to stop could include better health, better skin or saving money. Theyâre great reasons and most would believe that they would be great motivators. However, if the person has just as many reasons or stronger reasons why they donât want to, such as smoking meeting the 3 of the 6 human needs of Certainty, Variety and Love/Connection that we spoke about last week, then they will likely struggle to stop smoking, if they succeed at all.
So, if there is a goal that you have been trying to achieve and you havenât succeeded yet, itâs imperative that you examine not only your Why-To reasons, but also your Why-Not-To reasons. You may not be consciously aware of them, but they will be there nonetheless.
Thereâs a reason why you do everything you do. Why do you do what you do? What are your Why-Toâs and Why-Not-Toâs?
