Finding Balance in Transition - Comfort in the In-Between
Maintaining Stability During Life's Changes
Change can be exciting, but it can also be uncomfortable. Right now, Iâm in a bit of a transition phaseânot quite settled into van life just yet, but also not living in my old home anymore. The campervan renovations are underway, and while Iâm grateful to be staying with my family, this in-between stage has been a lesson in patience, flexibility, and embracing the process.
The Reality of Transition
Leaving behind the familiar can stir up all sorts of emotions. Thereâs excitement for the adventure ahead, but also moments of doubt, impatience, and the occasional "What have I gotten myself into?" thought. Transition periods, whether itâs moving, starting a new job, or making lifestyle changes, can feel messy and uncertain. But hereâs what Iâm learning: this in-between space is where the real growth happens.
Lessons from the Journey So Far
Let Go of Timelines â Things rarely go exactly as planned. When I originally made the decision to embark on the van life journey, I imagined that I would find exactly what I wanted and needed in a van and that I would already be settled into it by now. However, thatâs not how it worked out. The van I bought is a great van, but it needed some adjustments to suit my particular circumstances and renovations take time. Instead of stressing over when things will be âdone,â Iâm focusing on appreciating where I am right now. I get to spend time with family that I havenât had a chance to spend as much time with as I would have liked over the last 30 years or so, which is wonderful! Every time another of my âplansâ doesnât go to plan (which seems to be most of the time lol!), I look for the gift in where I end up and I remember the quote my millennial daughter constantly quotes to me about plans from Captain Cold, "Make the plan, execute the plan, expect the plan to go off the rails....throw away the plan". So, Iâll continue making plans, knowing it will always work out for the best even if it goes west, and then remind myself of that quote!
Find Stability in Small Routines â Having a bit of consistency, even in uncertain times, makes all the difference. A morning coffee, journaling, or even a short walk with Princess Lulu helps create a sense of normalcy, no matter where I am.
Trust the Process â Change doesnât always feel comfortable, but that doesnât mean itâs not leading somewhere good. Just like with the van, adjustments and improvements take time, and every step forward is a step toward something better.
Your Invitation to Embrace Change
If youâre in a transition phase, big or small, give yourself permission to take it one step at a time. Change isnât just about where youâre goingâitâs also about who youâre becoming along the way.
Have you ever felt stuck in an âin-betweenâ phase? What helped you navigate it? Letâs chat in the comments!

Identify a small, manageable habit you've been wanting to establishâsuch as drinking a glass of water upon waking, taking a 10-minute walk daily, or setting aside time for a hobby. Commit to integrating this habit into your daily routine for the next seven days. This exercise can help you build resilience and adaptability during periods of change.
