Barossa Valley – Wine, Celebrations and Scenic Views
From unexpected road stops to gourmet delights, this leg of the journey served up a perfect mix of chaos, charm, and celebration.
A Sunrise Worth the Detour
After pushing through a long night of driving and grabbing just a few hours of sleep at a roadside rest stop, we woke to something completely magical—a breathtaking sunrise. There was no toilet in sight and getting to the porta potty was just too hard, so let’s just say it was nature's bathroom for the win! And honestly? That sunrise made it 100% worth it. Nature was putting on a show, and we had front row seats.

Service, Setbacks and Surprise Support
We rolled into the Barossa Valley a little late but grateful to have made it. We'd booked the van in for the service it desperately needed before heading into the outback, but of course, nothing ever goes exactly to plan. The team at Barossa Volkswagen had no idea we were coming—despite the online booking. Facepalm moment! But after some back-and-forth, they worked their magic, found what they needed, and committed to doing the big job in the time we had. Absolute legends!
With Princess Panda (our van!) in the hands of the experts, we unloaded what we needed for the next couple of days and were even given a lift to our motel. They later dropped the van off after it was serviced, just like they said they would. That’s service you don’t forget.
Exploring Tanunda and Finding a Hidden Gem
We stayed at The Wine Vine Hotel in Tanunda—comfy beds, ideal location, and the perfect base for a couple of days of exploring, eating, and indulging. After checking in and getting sorted, we wandered the main street and picked up a few groceries. When dinner time came around, we stumbled upon Bar:Musque, a quirky restaurant with an adventurous menu and "mystery wines." It turned out to be one of the absolute highlights of the trip. Delicious food, great vibe, and an experience we won’t forget anytime soon.
A New Year's Eve to Remember
New Year’s Eve was the kind of day that you look back on with a smile. We did the Barossa Tipple of Gin Tour with Barossa Wine Tours—a full-day journey through boutique wineries and a gin distillery. The tour guide was fantastic: knowledgeable, warm, and passionate about the region. We visited places we’d never have found on our own—hidden gems full of flavour and stories.
We returned to our motel to find Princess Panda waiting for us, freshly serviced and ready for the next leg of the adventure. The evening wrapped up with a cheese and charcuterie board and a glass (or two) of wine. None of us made it to midnight—we were all tucked up by 7pm, welcoming the new year in the best way: rested, content, and full of gratitude.

Happy New Year! What a way to end the year!

The answer to this week’s trivia question is:
Answer: True
Grapes—especially red and purple varieties—are rich in antioxidants like resveratrol and flavonoids. These compounds, found in the skin of the grape, have been linked to heart and brain health in various studies (Harvard Health, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry). While moderation is still key, the natural goodness in grapes is worth raising a glass to!
